Welcome to JIU's Exegesis Resources

Hermeneutics or exegesis is the elaboration or interpretation of a text. You are assigned to interpret a passage in the Bible critically. The word's root is solved from the Greek exēgeisthai (via Merriam-Webster). Exegesis involves an examination process through which people understand specific passages of text. A course in the Bible that records an entire event or narrative is called a pericope. Your professor's detailed instructions and your research interests will determine which pericope you choose to interpret or the exact material you need for your work. Of course, you can always ask a librarian to help you find the perfect resource!

First, you'll want to explore the context of the article. This involves imagining yourself as part of the story. What's the date today? What happened in history? What are the social forces at work?

Second, you will read the text in depth. Explore the author's word choice, grammar, and perceived intent, and interact with others who have written on the topic before you.

Finally, analyze the scriptures theologically. What do you think the focus of your research on pericope is, and how do you apply it to your daily life?
