About the Role

The Executive Vice President is a very senior role at Juneteenth International University, the EVP reports directly to the President. You will oversee all of the non-academic functions of the university, including property, human resources, information technology, and finances. The administrative functions of the University are many and varied, so you will lead a large team of specialist professional managers.

Responsibilities

The university executive vice president of administration has overall responsibility for areas including finance, buildings, facilities, human resources and technology. Typically, you will run committees, which comprise a mix of academics and professionals, relating to these areas. You will be also the line manager of the heads of each administrative function. You will be a member of the senior management team of the university and works with the president and vice chancellor, as well as the vice presidents of academic affairs and research, to determine the university's strategic direction. That may be, for example, to increase the number or diversity of students, to increase expertise in certain disciplines or to open a specialist school, such as a law school, etc.

Requirements

Qualifications and Experience

To be considered for the role of the vice president for administration, the candidate would need to be educated to at least master's degree level in a business or management subject. Preferably, you would have a Ph.D. or be a certified public accountant. Universities are large and complex organizations, so you must have at least 15 years' experience in administrative management in a similar environment -- such as another university, a large hospital or government institution. You must have experience managing large teams of people and multimillion dollar budgets.

 

Skills

For this role, you need outstanding interpersonal skills with an ability to influence and lead a wide variety of people. You are dealing with senior academics, fellow business professionals and more junior workers, not to mention faculty and students. Organizational skills are also key, because you are responsible for overseeing so many different activities, from finance to organizing events and conferences. You must be able to create effective professional relationships, negotiate contracts and agreements, and gain consensus from all stakeholders. Proficiency in English and French preferred, since the university physical campus is in Quebec, Canada.

 

Personal Qualities

Academics habitually work in a collaborative way. All universities are driven by hundreds of committees, of which you have to chair a large number and sit as a member of others. A calm but authoritative manner is an essential tool in leading meetings effectively. Universities are also political places, with many academics constantly jostling for status and funding. You must have the political sense to navigate your way through all the competing interests and to make objective and balanced decisions.
