About the Role

Job Summary:

This is a full-time administrative and executive appointment with a projected start date of March 1, 2024. Salary commensurate with experience. This position is responsible for the management and leadership of the following academic departments: Agribusiness, Animal Science, Landscape Architecture and Environmental Sciences, Equine Science and Management, Food Science, Plant Science, as well as the University’s animal production facilities, farms and the Littlefield Programs for Biotechnology, Biosciences and Hydroponics. The Dean will have the opportunity to help build and establish the school based on JIU and their vision for the maximum students possible. The Dean reports to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs.

Primary Responsibilities:
1. Provide vision, direction, leadership and inspiration for the school and serve as chief ambassador and change leader
2. Promote and serve as a role model for collegiality, integration, communication, and collaboration among school personnel, programs and resources
3. Ensure a school and university-wide culture of academic excellence emphasizing high academic standards, excellent teaching, faculty and student scholarship, continuous quality improvement and data driven decision-making
4. Confidently and passionately represent the school both internally and externally
5. In collaboration with the University’s division of Institutional Advancement and Office of Alumni Engagement actively pursue the development of a school advancement program focused on the cultivation and acquisition of resources for continuing development and improvement of the school
6. Implement plan to achieve elevating the academic profile of the school, as well as ensuring successful integration of applied and experiential learning into every program
7. Provide leadership in the management of all budgets, personnel and resources with the school
8. Ensure compliance with all internal policies and external regulatory agencies and specialized accreditation agencies (Quebec Ministry of Education, Commission of Higher Education, Landscape Architectural Accreditation Board, Quebec Certified Organic, etc.)
9. Advocate for students, faculty, staff and intellectual diversity in the school and its departments
10. Initiate, foster and maintain industry and school district partnerships that will assist in curriculum development and career opportunities for graduates
11. Periodic teaching in relevant discipline as schedule allows
12. Other duties and responsibilities as assigned

Requirements

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

·     Outstanding written and verbal communication skills

·     Reputation as an accessible and decisive leader effective in managing change, conflict and problem-solving

·     Successful leadership roles in strategic planning, academic program review, assessing student learning outcomes, and program or regional accreditation desired

·     Successful experience in academic fund raising desired

·     Record of successful scholarship including peer reviewed publications desired

·     Record of securing extramural grants, gifts or contracts desired

·     Has a well-articulated view of the appropriate relationship between teaching, service and scholarship activities desired


Required Education, Experience, and License:

·     Qualified candidate must have a doctoral degree in a discipline housed in the School of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences or a closely related discipline

·     Must additionally have a record of successful administrative/leadership roles and responsibilities

·     Successful experience in collaborative efforts to enhance and extend university wide programs

·     Prior experience in effective teaching desired
